Outdoor Cover Fixing & Tie Down Options: What to Choose
Choosing the right tie‑down option helps ensure your cover stays secure, fits neatly, and performs well in different conditions. This guide explains the available fixing options, how they work, and when each is best suited.
Fixing options for screens and tarps?
This article relates specifically to outdoor cover fixing & tie down options. For flat screen and tarp fixing options you should check this related article.
Drawstring (fitted as standard)
A drawstring runs through the hem of the cover, allowing it to be pulled tight around the base of your item. This helps reduce excess fabric and keeps the cover sitting neatly in place.
Drawstrings are a simple, practical fixing option best suited to sheltered areas or furniture that’s easy to access all the way around. They also make covers quick and easy to fit and remove.
Elasticated corners
Elasticated corners are sewn into the lower edges of the cover, helping it grip the corners of your items and naturally hold its shape. This creates a cleaner, more tailored appearance without loose fabric around the base.
They’re ideal for items with defined corners and provide a secure fit with minimal effort during fitting and removal. A popular choice for everyday protection where ease of use matters.
Grommet eyelets
Grommet eyelets are reinforced metal rings fitted along the edges of the cover. They allow the cover to be tied down using cords, bungees, or other suitable fixings, creating a flexible and adjustable way to secure the cover firmly in place.
Eyelets are especially useful for irregular shapes or fixed structures, and where specific anchor points are required. They offer a strong, reliable hold in more exposed or demanding environments.
Grommet eyelet specification
As standard, we use a 23mm external diameter brass coloured grommet eyelet in our outdoor covers. Other sizes and colours are available however, as detailed below:
- 28mm external diameter, 17mm internal: brass
- 23mm external diameter, 12mm internal: brass (this is what we fit as standard) and silver
- 18mm external diameter, 10mm internal: brass
The diagram below shows all the available sizes and colour options.
Snap buckles
Snap buckles secure the cover using adjustable straps that fasten underneath or around the item’s frame. This provides strong resistance to wind lift and movement, making snap buckles well suited to exposed locations or heavier covers.
They allow tension to be adjusted easily, helping keep the cover firmly in place even in challenging conditions.
Snap buckles + elasticated corners
This option combines snap buckle security with elasticated corners, creating a neater, more tailored fit that stays firmly in place. Elasticated corners help shape the cover, while snap buckles provide added hold and wind resistance.
This is a great choice where you want maximum security without compromising appearance.
Not sure which option is right?
If you’re unsure which tie‑down option best suits your setup, consider:
- How exposed the location is to wind
- Whether the item has a frame or anchor points
- How often you’ll be fitting and removing the cover
